Request for update on timeline

Request for update on timeline

As most of us know, the interview process is long and opaque. The exact wording of this response will varying, but here is an example:

Dear Dr. […],

Nice to hear from you.

At this stage, we are still interviewing, and the dean is considering candidates including you. At some point, she will write an initial offer letter to her preferred candidate. If that is you, you should hear soon ([time, e.g., this month]). If she is interested in hiring you but you are not first on the list, there is still a chance you would be offered a position, but the timeline will be longer. Either way, it’s a long time before the process is final, and that means there may be uncertainty for quite a while (months). I hope that gives you sense of the process and where we are. If you have further questions please ask.

Again, thank you for your interest, and we greatly enjoyed meeting you during your interview. Rest assured you are being carefully considered for this position.

Sincerely,

[…]
