Bruin Brief 2022-02-17 eValue Evolution

Competencies in informatics and healthcare technologies (see AACN Essentials, Domain 8) require nurses to “use information and communication technologies and informatics tools in their direct and indirect roles.” Our faculty and staff are doing just that. Together, we’re streamlining our work and demonstrating to students that our School of Nursing will “gather, create, and generate knowledge” using information technologies (competency 8.2).
eValue is Transforming APRN Clinical Placement Processes
You’ve seen e-mails about eValue, but what has eValue done to streamline SON processes? This Bruin Brief will highlight the APRN team’s transformative work. Starting with clinical grids in Microsoft Word, the team has pivoted to use the more powerful eValue system. Featuring advanced filtering capabilities, eValue allows clinical placement teams to:
quickly find data about students and clinical sites to make assignments
communicate within and across program specialties about student placements
automate evaluations of the student, site, and preceptor
The Old Way
Previously, a massive amount of data was collected and stored on a Word document that was difficult to share between the APRN clinical placements team and faculty. Pediatrics, Adult/Gero, and FNP specialties would maintain their own records in one of many formats. Some used Google docs, others Excel, or Word. Here’s one example of the old way of managing clinical placement data:
The old way was useful, but fell short of the needs of the School for retrievable, filtered data in a shared database.
The New Way
Now, APRN Program teams manipulate student and clinical site information in eValue. Starting with student-to-site matches, the entire team shares the same platform and can manage students’ clinical preceptorships from setup through evaluation.
Similarly, clinical placements team easily run reports in eValue and export data to faculty about upcoming clinical assignments each quarter.
A How-To Guide: Simple Steps
Learn how to look at your own student clinical placements by following this 3-slide tutorial.
First, log in to eValue from the intranet (http://www.sonnet.ucla.edu ). Use Duo Authenticate to gain access. On the home page, go to the Reports tab, then the User Schedule (see below).
Next, select a date range for your report.
Finally, Expand All to see the students your clinical group this quarter, along with their site assignments.
What is the Net Benefit?
For staff, students, and faculty we benefit from eValue in these ways when it comes to clinical education:
24/7 cloud-based access to student placements
collaborative workspace with real-time updates as placements change
long-term repository for clinical site-specific and student-specific data
protected, confidential environment for evaluative data about preceptors, sites, and students
trends in clinical education and placements can be produced for the California Board of Nursing and CCNE accreditors, all facilitated by integrated, retrievable, filterable data by program
What’s next?
Please stay tuned for further updates on the eValue scheduling tool, eValue assignment tool, and collecting clinical evaluation data. eValue is just one piece in our global plan to provide the best possible quality of education to all of our UCLA nursing students.
