Bruin Brief 2022-12-09 Curriculum Leveling

 Curriculum Leveling |
In January I’ll give my first lecture in a course on disability justice and health care. Like everyone else on faculty, I need to apply what we’re learning about competency-based evaluation and the AACN Essentials. So I mapped the course. And I’m taking special care to meet the competencies with authentic, competency-based evaluations. For example, in the domain of Population Health, students will meet this objective:
3.5d Implement messaging strategies appropriate to audience and stakeholders.
Their challenge is to create an accessible infographic geared to the needs of people a variety of impairments. So we talk about visual impairments, alt-text, and plain language.
And if the students need to be competent in messaging, I figured I should do it, too.
So today you will see my effort to create an infographic appropriate to this audience (I hope!). With our Essentials workshop just a week away, this infographic will set up some background about models of curriculum leveling. At the workshop, Gerry Altmiller will give us some examples. In small groups, we’ll brainstorm ways to address competencies at the beginning, middle, and end of our programs. Â
You can let me know if the infographic assignment meets sub-competency 3.5d in a meaningful way for you. See you next week!
