The Office of Government and Community Relations coordinates with the UCLA community, the University of California, and national, state and local governmental entities to generate support for the University and UCLA's interests. G&CR builds relationships with constituent groups, assists community leaders in gaining access to UCLA's resources, and coordinates the University response to a wide range of political and policy issues. Conflict of Commitment

By now, you should have filled out the annual Conflict of Commitment form.  It says, in essence, that you may not engage in any outside activities beyond UCLA employment that compromise your allegiance to the UC. UC faculty members owe their primary professional allegiance to the University and accept as their own the University’s responsibilities to advance and communicate knowledge. Conflict of commitment occurs when a faculty member engages in outside professional activities that interfere with that faculty member’s professional obligations to the University.  In addition to advancing and transmitting knowledge, these professional obligations include maintaining a significant presence on campus, meeting classes, keeping office hours, holding examinations as scheduled, being accessible to students and staff, being available to interact with University colleagues, and sharing service responsibilities throughout every quarter or semester of active service.

If you engage in any outside professional activities (like working for a hospital, or working on a campaign, or working on outside professional activities), those must all be disclosed, then the COI committee determines if it’s a Category I, II, or II conflict.  Activities in Categories II, III require you to commit no more than 48 days/year.  https://apo.ucla.edu/policies-forms/the-call/appendices/appendix-19-conflict-of-commitment-and-outside-professional-activities

Use of UCLA Provided Equipment

As you would expect, you can’t use your university computer, telephone, office, email address, printer, logos, letterhead, or other assets for any communication with elected officials or when you engage with lobbying efforts.  

In part:  “UCLA staff, faculty, and individual student use of the University Assets or their affiliation with the University in any manner that suggests or implies University support, endorsement or advancement of, or opposition to, any issue, activity or program, whether political, religious, economic or otherwise; or g.   Use of the UCLA name in any website address/URL form (e.g., ucla_organization.edu) other than as provided in UCLA Policy 411, Registration and Use of UCLA Domain Names.”

It is best practice when advocating on behalf of a bill or policy, to do so off campus, on your own time, using your own computer, email, and resources.  It is also best practice to not represent oneself as a UCLA Faculty member, since we are not authorized to represent the university or the School of Nursing unless we’re serving in an official capacity.
