Getting started with Confluence
Help for Confluence specific to SON. There is plenty of generic help, but these are great tips and getting started guides.
Basics
To change a page, “edit” (pencil), “Publish” when done
Two use-all-the-time shortcut keys
“e” to start editing a page
“k” to open link to page for copying
Not-so-obvious but super helpful thingies
Organizing in a tree structure is a critical feature of Confluence. It is frequently useful to have a “Table of Contents” of subpages. From a page (starting with home):
Insert (the “+” symbol) to add “children display” (like a table of contents for subpages)
Can also type “/” and a list of macros will appear. Typing “/C” will bring up macros starting with the letter “C”
Create subpages; these will show up in this “children display”
Use heading styles as often as possible; for larger pages this lets you create a table of contents
If you have copied an image, you can paste it directly – this is awesome, I do this most days
If you do a lot of snapshots, get snagit software, it’s what I use for steps, arrows, shapes etc like here: https://uclason.atlassian.net/wiki/x/AQBK
Common bug: Sometimes pasting does not work (for example, from Outlook); to resolve, paste to a bitmap program (Paint, IrfanView), copy again, then it will paste ok.
The layout tools and tables are great for organizing areas of the page – left/right in above page, another left/right example of two tables of contents (headings page and subpages) : https://uclason.atlassian.net/wiki/x/AYAq
Important shortcut key:
“Tab” to indent paragraphs (for example to create this indented bullet)
“Shift^Tab” to un-indent paragraphs (for example if I wanted to return this point to higher level)
“c” creates a subpage
