Next steps as of July 2022

What to do this summer, before Sept 15:

  1. Start by completing the curriculum map entry for your course. Curriculum mapping is identifying which competencies your course addresses; it does not involve changing course outcomes. Open the overall curriculum map for your program (attached below), find the row with your course number, and then follow the steps outlined by Dr. Altmiller.  For an example and helpful tips, you can find her PDF presentation in the folder called “Curriculum Mapping for Faculty in APRN and BS Program.” The info is also in Faculty Resources file https://uclahs.box.com/s/ferkpviyjqzrr7qz4lirtnlm1k8nwpqg   These maps will be due by Sept 15th to the Essentials Taskforce.

  2. If you want to change your course for this fall as an Early Adopter, map ‘what is’ for one of the courses you teach. There’s a Template Course Mapping Matrix for early adopters (attached) and also in the Faculty Resources file https://uclahs.box.com/s/ferkpviyjqzrr7qz4lirtnlm1k8nwpqg Get together with your Program Director and other faculty who teach related courses in the same program to compare what you’re planning to adjust for fall.

  3. The table (below) is one way to prep the Course Mapping Matrix to line up the current course with the AACN sub-competencies.  Adding those sub-competencies to the course is a proposed change you can discuss with colleagues, along with updates teaching methods and competency-based assessment techniques.  Once you have fine-tuned your plans, let the Program Director know so you can present at the next Program meeting, share your early adopter worksheet, and ask other faculty to endorse your revised skills/competencies.

Attend Office Hours. Join Bruin Learn instructional designers and teaching & learning specialists for drop-in office hours to discuss advanced topics or design considerations. You can find a list of Office Hours dates and times on the Bruin Learn Office Hours page.

Request one-on-one support. Join one of our Instructional Designers, Kim Ballard, for one-on-one training. This is a great opportunity to ask questions on a certain function or have an expert review your progress in Bruin Learn. Contact Kim via the information listed below.

Where to Seek Help

Help is just a click away. In the “Help” menu, you will find information on self-guided training resources designed to teach you general platform navigation. Enhanced trainings are also available in the Bruin Learn Resource Guide. Bruin Learn support is available 24/7 via chat or phone with Canvas Support, as well as from the Help menu.

All in all, the Essentials Taskforce of the School is working this summer on project management of the AACN Essentials implementation. We have guidance from Dr. Altmiller and ongoing input from program faculty, leaders, and the Curriculum Committee.  Feel free to reach out to any of us to discuss or ask questions.

Keep in mind that we are working backward from the End of Program Outcomes (EPO) to course competencies. EPO have been specified by the BS program (only) so far. The MSN-APRN program is working on EPO but they are not done for faculty review yet.  We need EPOs because that’s how we can tell if a course is doing its job—course competencies match up and build toward EPO.
